Hohensyburg

My friend Silvia showed me some amazing things in Germany!

One of them was Hohensyburg---High Victory Castle!

This is Germany's response to England's Maiden Castle! Although Maiden Castle is known as Britain's biggest hill fort, at 18 hectares, few, even in Germany, know about Hohensyburg, clocking in at 14 hectares. Unlike Maiden hill however, which merely has the ruins of a Roman temple on it, this hill fort is covered by trees, a casino, an octagonal tower, the ruins of a knight's castle, a huge memorial to the Kaiser who looks over part of the Rhur valley, a carpark, roads and more!

People say Maiden Hill castle is too big to have been used as a defensive system, but Hohensyburg was used by Saxon king Widukind, in 775, to unsuccessfully resist Charlemagne, who stormed the high fortress.

Some obvious ramparts around the hill fort. Looking over one edge of one 'wall', I saw at least five additional layers of ramparts below!
