Interesting Sci-fi authors!

Sci Fi Authors and genres, some musings

There are different types of sci-fi authors. They have various styles. These are some authors where I would actively seek out more than one of his/her books to read.
My favourites at the moment are Ballard and Stanislaw Lem, the top Polish sci-fi author, (and my favourite number one Sci Fi author). His books are deliberately confusingly entertaining. Ballard's books by contrast are entertaining because the whole thing is one big enormous high-technological train wreck unfolding before your eyes, with people being hijacked by some strange intelligence (?) as a metatheme between the works, and behaving as humans do not normally behave. There is a high element of surrealism in Ballard's works. Above all, his books are really easy to read. Then we come to authors like Iain M. Banks, whose works are harder to read. The overall theme is often only really presented at the end, so they read almost like a kind of thriller.

Leah Brackett... her works are really good! A kind of good 'femme fetale' in a position of political superiority features in her works who meets and works with a strong mysterious man who is being persecuted and has some hidden talents. Her John Stark trilogy reminds me a lot of the Rowan of Rin books by Emily Rodda, for some reason, a kind of epic quest, but less epic than 'Lord of the Rings', upon which both sets of books are based.

Arthur C. Clark... wow! I recommend his short stories. Amazing, funny, ironic and they really place you in a different world, and with a different way of thinking. One of his short stories is quite interesting in that it starts off with someone saying: 'I contend we were defeated by the inferior technology of our enemies!'. Another features people reteating to the equator having to shift every year or so, to get away from the advancing ice. Eventually, instead of finding a garden of eden, they see ice on the horizon advancing from the other pole!

C. S. Lewis. 'Out of the Silent Planet' is just great. I read it in primary school and it made quite an impact. The sequels... hmmmmmmmmm.

More random stuff to come!
